Maker's Statement:
My work is inspired by forms and textures found in nature. More recently I have been exploring architectural materials which have been worked by craftsman's hands in the past, but which are eroding, weathering and returning to nature. These are reborn as new works in glass. My work is represented in 39 museum collections worldwide.
I work with kilncast glass, making pieces for exhibition and commission. This is a sculptural technique in which glass is cast into a mould with excellent reproduction of form and texture. I use optical glass, giving superb clarity and enabling me to work with the internal volumes of the piece. As well as works for exhibition I have developed large-scale kilncasting for site-specific works, such as 'Bamboo Scroll', a major commission in cast glass and steel for Shanghai Public Library and outdoor works such as 'River Rocks', a commission for the River Lune Millennium Park, Lancs.
Applications for apprentices are welcome.
Studio visits are welcome.
Commissioning Procedure
I am very open in my approach to working with a client. They may see something they like in my existing portfolio of work, or may wish to commission a new piece for a specific setting. I try to address the client's wishes while maintaining my own style and visual language.
I can provide images and sketches so ideas can be discussed and agreed.
I am happy to travel within reason nationally or internationally, especially for a larger commission which may be site specific.
Clients are welcome to visit my studio by appointment.
I do take on apprentices from time to time, normally new graduates who want to get experience working in a professional studio.
Pricing Policy
Commissioned works are priced based on the size and complexity of the commission
Colin's work is typically priced from about £2500 - £5000, but he does have some smaller pieces which start at £950
