Press Quotes: ‘Gilberts silver leaps across cultural boundaries and historical precedents. So much for the tendency of some art critics to classify works according to a current genre or to tie new works to a pattern of historical influence that excludes the independence of creativity…’ Helen Clifford, Metal work Dep. Victoria and Albert Museum
Maker's Statement:
I work as a Decorative Applied artist, as a silversmith and also in cast iron and other materials. Commissions since 2004 include 2 small sculptures of fantastic beasts, an 18c gold cup weighing 1.5 kilos, a silver church censer set with semi precious stones, a jeweled bracelet for Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the parapets of a new road bridge over the Grand Union canal. All of these share a common, personal, decorative language. I love pattern and want to create ornament that leads the eye on with a sense of surprise as it discovers order within freedom and freedom within the closely structured.
Studio visits are welcome.
Commissioning Procedure
I work in both precious metals such as gold and silver and non precious metal such as Ductile cast iron and aluminium in scale from domestic table ware to architectural. If after initial discussion design drawings are required they will be charged from £150 depending upon the complexity or number of drawings and models required.
Straightforward commissions based upon pre existing work may not require design drawings and designs of a more complex or individual nature will be charged for only if the commission is cancelled, I use design drawings as a basis for discussion with the client with meetings at which any necessary adjustments or selections will be made. There is a down payment of 50% of the total on confirmation of the commission.
Pricing Policy
The starting price for a commission is £1,500 but I have worked on commissions with budgets of £200 and £40,000. I work from drawings prepared in consultation with the client, discussed where possible at one or more meetings with the client kept informed throughout.
I am always happy to discuss design and price requirements.
A silver drinking beaker set with semi precious stone starts from £1,600 and a 25 cm chased silver dish standing on a silver base from £2,500. Architectural work will be priced according to the size of the project. but a single panel from a pre existing pattern would cost £850.
