Maker's Statement:
Alistair has practiced the Japanese metal working technique of Mokume Gane ( wood grain metal ) for over 20 years. The technique involves soldering different metals together to produce a sandwich. By breaking through the top layers of metal into the ones below, one is able to produce patterned sheets of metal. Due to the highly decorative surface patterns produced using this technique, Alistair strongly believes that it is best used on simple forms, where the relationship of pattern to the form is in harmony. This element of balance is something that he became aware of when visiting Japan in 1978. This experience has greatly influenced his work ever since.

Commissioning Procedure
Mokume Gane is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique and has been practiced for some three hundred years. The name Mokume Gane when translated into English means woodgrain metal or eye of the wood metal, this refers to the patterns normally produced in Japan. The technique requires a sandwich of different metals normally silver, copper and copper alloys to be joined together ether by difussion bonding or by silver soldering. Once the billet has been soldered it is then forged and milled into a sheet ready to be pattemed. The pattern can be produced in a veriety of ways but all involve breaking through the top layer of metal into the ones below. The desired pattern having been achieved, the sheet is then milled to produce a smooth patterned sheet of metal ready to be fashioned.
