Allen Wilding
I have been designing and making wool hand tufted rugs and wall hangings for twentytwo years.
My original sources of inspiration, Miro, Rothko, Mattisse, and Cezanne are still relevant to my work, but my influences have naturally broadened over time. The central themes of colour and spatial linear elements have always played an important part in my designs.
For me the most enjoyable aspect of the design process is developing and deepening my understanding of colour. I use a combination of techniques such as, flat colour, shading and three tone stipples, which create the most vibrant colours. I also enjoy the interplay of formal shapes and freely drawn linear elements.

Maker's Statement:
In the wallhangings, I often use dual pile heights and low relief carving to draw attention to the differing effects of light falling on the surface. A recent and exciting development has come from collaborating with a ceramic artist to design and make a series of wallhangings. The wallhangings are concerned with the inherent visual tensions of the two materials, which are explored through both abstract and pictorial themes to create a series of fascinating wallhangings.
