Williams and Cleal

Justin Williams and Jane Cleal both trained for three years at Buckinghamshire College, the centre of excellence for English Furniture. Thereafter we gained experience with other furniture makers - Jane Cleal working with the internationally renowned Alan Peters OBE. Establishing the partnership in 1990, we have completed a wide range of commissions.

Maker's Statement:
Our approach is based on the meticulous application of traditional methods of construction and finishing. We produce furniture which is unique, finely executed and possessing a timeless quality. Hallmarks of our work include fine detailing and subtle curved lines. The choice of timber and grain matching ensures that all our work celebrates the natural beauty of wood.

We use mostly British and North American hardwoods from sustainable resources and, wherever appropriate, use natural oil and wax finishes.
Studio visits are welcome.

Commissioning Procedure
We prefer to start by visiting the client at the place where the piece will be located, to thoroughly assess and discuss the main areas of the project. This will include the gathering of information related to aesthetics, functional considerations, sizes, choice of materials, available budgets and delivery dates.

Our approach to this stage will vary according to whether the client prefers to work to an open brief or simply needs help in refining their own ideas. We are also more than happy to work with architects and interior designers.

The design process begins in the initial consultation. Thereafter we will produce initial designs. At this stage clients are encouraged to discuss any modifications or changes they wish to include, before a final detailed proposal is submitted.

Whether the project is a small jewellery box or a fully fitted kitchen or library interior, having confirmed the proposal the client is kept fully informed throughout its realisation. We encourage clients to visit our workshop and view the project as it evolves and progresses.
