Andreas Thumfart

Andreas Thumfart was born in 1974 in Haag am Hausruck in Austria. His earliest art influence at the age of 4 years was watching an artist who used to have his gallery in the house where Andreas grew up. Andreas spent lots of time watching him creating oil paintings and made his first experiences with art. Many years later, at the age of twenty, Andreas decided, now strongly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, to make drawings, sketches and oil paintings.

Later he recognized the in his opinion poor market especially with designs for wall and floor. He started to create mosaic art installations for wall and floor using many different materials such as natural stone, marble, broken tiles, smaltis and glastiles. Soon he earned a lot of positive feedback from friends and interior designers visiting his house. He decided to leave his occupation as a graphics designer and opened the MOSArtIC mosaic studio located in Pasching, Austria.

When asked why he became an mosaic artist, Thumfart replies, " I have always been an artist one way or another. Mosaic is a medium that shows me so much possibilities in the creation process and this is my preferred way to make discoveries.

Thumfart is a high perfectionist when it comes down to quality. Superior design is not enough for him and therefore he only uses best material to work with. Also on the working process this aim for perfection becomes visible. He rather grinds each cut edge of Smaltis by hand than being satisfied with less.

With his artworks he aims to bring the ancient mosaic into the new century and sees his art as small contribution to raise the awareness of public for mosaic art and the possibilities it offers for interior design.

His mosaic artworks are highly recognized among interior designers and mosaic artists worldwide.

Maker's Statement:
Being a mosaic artist, I see my role in creating unique, modern, high-quality mosaic art installations that contribute to raise awareness for the beauty and possibilities this medium offers, especially with interior design. My artistic background has involved oil painting, later computer graphic design.

My experience in oil painting allows me to capture an authentic likeness of my subjects in mosaic form.

Mosaicing for me is „Painting with Glass“. My aim is to help bring ancient mosaic art into the new century by developing unique, modern designs. My attempt is to create mosaic installations that are a pleasure to live with and add beauty to the environment.

The idea of creating modern mosaic as an individual and unique way of design was born, when I realized myself the wish for exclusive ways of wall- and floor design, providing ambience and style.

I create one-of-a-kind, site-specific work for residential and commercial spaces, contemporary mosaics for gallery and architecture. Mainly my mosaic installations are most suitable for wall and floor and I design extravagant wall pictures, medallions, exquisite floor carpets and installations for interior sites (spa, bathroom, living room, medical practices, hotels, restaurants, offices and other). I also offer to create mosaic according to provided design and pictures for my clients.

The process begins with an idea of a place, real or imaginary, and then I will scout out locations for subject matter to be used in the piece. The work proceeds through a series of sketches to a full-sized drawing, which is used later as draft in order for me to see how I have to cut and arrange smaltis. I use traditional glass-cutting tools to hand cut each tile and grind each cut edge by hand to achieve best possible quality.

My preferred material to work with is Murano Glass Smalti, because of the beauty and uniqueness of each smalti. Shining reflections and changing luster according to the way the light hit’s the mosaic, depending on the minimal arched surface, give the viewer the impression to have insights into many different characters of the mosaic.

I also create mosaic art using materials such as natural stones, broken tiles, tesserae to name a few.

One of the immensely satisfying results of creating mosaics, is that they offer the viewer the ability to touch and feel and explore - viewing is not enough.

I am a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and BAMM.

Commissioning Procedure
I offer handmade Mosaic, primarily using first-class Venetian Murano Glass Smaltos to range from extravagant wallpictures, medallions, to exquisite floor carpets as well as company logo.

A mosaic provides every room with an incomparable ambiance and the mosaics are suitable for spa's, bathrooms, and living rooms as well as for medical practices, hotels, restaurants, offices.

All mosaics are handmade, easy to clean, and meet highest quality criteria.

I have mosaics ready to go and also create custom mosaics for my clients, which provide the client with the opportunity to own a unique piece, especially designed to meet his or her requirements. I can transform any design, painting, portrait, picture...into mosaic and leave it up to the client to choose colours, materials and size. I will try to discover first what style the client is looking for will than create a first design on paper upon this basis to be further discussed. If a client has a concrete idea of what he/she is looking for and/or can supply pictures or drafts or other visual material, I will either completely design the mosaic according to the pictures I received, or if welcome, I will create a design on the basis of the material I was provided with. I will then estimate the price and explain how I will proceed. A deposit (usually about 50 %) is required on acceptance for the commission.

Purchasing an authenticity certificate is an additional opportunity option for clients who want to save the rights on their mosaic image.
