Maker's Statement:
Kaniez Abdi graduated from The Royal College of Art in 1998, where she studied Constructed Textile Design. Since graduating, Kaniez has been working on a freelance basis, specialising in creating highly individual textiles which can be used in fashion, trend and interiors.
Kaniez uses her background in textile design, to develop series of ideas where she experiments with different techniques and materials. Kaniez uses techniques, such as hand sewing, machine embroidery, bonding, heating, dyeing, painting, printing, etc.
Kaniez also uses photography, taking pictures of nature and everyday happenings. I use photography and develop ideas, through the use of computer manipulation, changing the original image size, colour and abstracting the image, which makes her work bold and graphic.
Kaniez work is applied in two ways; she works on projects, where she specialises in providing manufacturers and wholesalers with textile design concepts. These concepts are then incorporated, into their own brand ranges for fashion and interiors. The designs are then used and integrated into the company’s philosophy, allowing for a unique progression in their own product ranges.
Kaniez also specialises in providing interior designers and architects with lampshades, wall lighting, textile art wall hangings, digital prints and soft furnishings for site-specific projects such as hotels, restaurants, bars, corporate receptions and residential properties.
Studio visits are welcome.
